Evening was setting upon the horizon. The sun, now fading into the west casted blinding rays of spun gold upon the smooth facade of the Tin Tower in the distance to fragment and bathe every corner of Ecruteak City in a dazzling display that made the olden town seem like the region's biggest stage.
A stage where everyone was a player and all fought to win.
The fountain they were resting upon in the city square offered her a good view of the local gym and she couldn't help but crack a smile as a young boy whom had entered twenty minutes earlier came out looking like hell warmed over but carrying a distinct glow; The sort she often saw in the face of a person who suddenly found out that impossible was merely a four-syllable word, a wall of glass parading as brick.
Rayne let out a deep sigh and stared at the small trinket she had been fiddling with for the past hour or two. To the naked eye, it wouldn't have been much of a treasure; merely a piece of white steel tempered into the rough shape of some ghoul.
This was the Ecruteak Badge however and it was an affirmation to what she had thought the moment she had stepped foot upon the very border of the city;
The more things changed, the more they stayed the same.
It had been six months since she had first set out and now she felt as though she was coming home to something she knew; She knew these people, she knew the scent of fresh pine in the air of the outskirts, she knew the wooden bridge where she had fallen and skinned her knees when she was eight.
They served as a reminder that as much of a rolling stone she was, there was always a place to call home even though she knew she couldn't stay for very long.
The next city called. The next challenge. The next step in a steep ladder only the most dedicated could even dream to scale.
At her feet laid a massive, heavily-scarred Houndoom which despite his relaxed posture of head on front paws, watched every soul passing by the streets warily as though danger could leap out of anywhere, even from the seven year old child who ran their way to retrieve a wayward ball.
The young girl stopped for a moment, staring apprehensively at the large Hellhound with what was obviously fear.
"It's alright honey. Wolfgang won't bite."
Rayne assured her as she handed the ball over. The girl mulled things over for a moment and found herself more distracted by the Luxio which was lounging lazily next to Rayne instead, marvelling at his sleek coat before running off to her father who was calling.
Once out of earshot, Wolfgang snorted derisively as the Luxio who sneered in return and Rayne had to put her hand on both to firmly warn them that fighting outside the gym was limited to something which did not involve losing a limb.
The Teddiursa resting on her head perked up alertly as the Floatzel which was catcing a few laps in the fountain before the caretaker came over screeching decided to come over to check on how high the sparks between the two were flying now.
Lion and Doberman bared fangs at each other for the umpteenth time this week as the cat's fur crackled with electricity.
God knows, he was always itching for a fight.
"Wolfgang, Jericho, at ease boys. You two made a great team in there."
Rayne assured them as the Luxio smirked and puffed his chest out accordingly, seeming to take the glory all for himself. Wolfgang rolled his eyes and laid his head on Rayne's lap instead, letting her run her hand through the fur on his head and the scar across his eye. He wasn't going to bother being a glory hog when mistress knew the truth anyway.
Nonetheless, they did make a splendid team against Morty's spectral hoardes, owing their win to both his natural immunity to major psychic attacks as well as Jericho's tenacity.
The feline was an idiot at times, but at least he was an idiot which could be counted on.
"You achieved a lot together and I'm proud a' both of you. Put your differences aside once in a while--you'll be surprised how well it's gonna work out."
She went on as she scritched Jericho under the chin, feeling the rumble of his deep purr vibrate through her fingers. The cat let out what was equivalent of a feline sigh and nodded curtly, leaping down from the fountain side to rub himself against the Houndoom in a show of acceptance before tawdling off to stretch his legs.
He let out a loud yowl however to alert Rayne to the fact that their team powerhouse, an intimidating specimen of a Nidoking was attracting a little too much attention in attempting to play with the girl from before; Her father looked more than aghast.
"C'mon big guy. Time to say bye bye."
She murmured and gently took the meek beast by the paw away from the child who waved at him happily. The Floatzel had finally finished with her laps and was now busy shaking droplets of water out of her fur besides grooming herself meticulously.
They were going to have to find an inn to rest for the night; Spending days in the forest, she could at least offer them that little luxury for a job well done.
Walking the streets though, it wasn't long before her Teddiursa's short attention span was snagged by the appearance of a new trainer; A handsome, bespectacled young lad seemed to be dithering over his Pokemon just outside the Center and by default, was recently duking it out in Morty's gym. The bat-like creature with wide spotlight eyes was new to Rayne and she smiled at the sight of it.
Her Teddiursa let out a soft grunt and toddled towards the animal, wonderment in her eyes as she stared at those wings and tried to immitate its flapping
"Pardon, Tatianna tends to get distracted rather easily."
Rayne explained apologetically as she bowed a little. The sketchbook in her hands was itching for something new as she fished out a stick of charcoal and began to detail the likeness of the creature swiftly and expertly upon the block pages.
"I haven't seen a Gligar in my travels so far. He's a wonderful specimen. I hope you don't mind?"
