Name: Ian Thomas
Alias/Nickname: N/A
Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
Occupation: Breeder, wishes to one day become a pokémon researcher
Badges: 0
Ribbons: 1
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Brown
Appearance:
Just under six feet of fun and still a bit lanky even in adulthood, Ian has the gift of being confident in his skin, even when he was a teen. Though born a very light brunette, time and sunlight have given him blonde hair like his mother and, after her death, he chose to grow it out and hold it back in a ponytail as she once did. He would have been happy to have her blue eyes to go with it, but he's still proud to have his dad's eyes: a consistent, milk-chocolate brown without any impure flecks of other colors mixed in.
Coming from a volcanic island, Ian tends to be notably cold-blooded and wears sweaters and layers even on relatively warm days and usually suffering from clod hands and feet. The one item of clothing he has on a majority of days is a thick, black scarf with his name stitched on it with silver thread in beautiful cursive handwriting. It was a gift from his family (paid for by his father by labeled as being from Chelsea too) and he always keep it in fine repair should anything befall it.
Attitude:
Want some good company? You could do worse. Ian would be happy to spring for a light lunch if you want to have some companionship for a little while; he’s a social person like any other human being, maybe more than usual for a researcher. Especially if you’re a pretty girl; Ian’s known as a bit of a skirt chaser and has had his share of relationships, good and bad.
That being said, he can be quite a bookworm when he wants to and Saver has started to chew his lilliputian notes more than once when he holed himself up too long. He tries to keep things balanced, though. Still, if he’s excited over some new theory or the like, it’s best not to waste your breath trying to distract him.
All of his good nature aside, he does have a bit of a temper. Since his father’s death it has become easier to make Ian grouchy, perhaps because he tends to translate negative emotions (anxiety, fear, sadness) into anger. He comes out of it fairly easy, but he’s been known to be downright callous when he gets moody. It’s best to just let him ride out these waves, though it can certainly be annoying.
Home Town: Cinnabar Island
Mother: Layla Thomas (Deceased)
Father: Mark Thomas (Deceased)
Adopted Sibling: Chelsea Thomas (Living)
Other(s): N/A
History:
Since the day she had married Mark, Layla had dreamed of children. She was so ready to be a mother that she just couldn’t wait to add to their family of two. Mark wasn’t so sure, but nobody doubted that Layla would get her way; the day Mark told his wife ‘no’ was the day Cinnabar froze over and laid an egg.
It was just over a year later that Ian Thomas was born. Sure, he might have been a bit spoiled as his parents’ first, but there was no doubt he was happy.
Things changed about five years later. Layla, coming back from a trip to visit her parents on the mainland, was killed when her boat was caught in a bad storm. Ian was confused more than scared most of the time, as his father left him with neighbors while he went to help the survivors. When all was said and done, Ian found himself without a mother, but with a new baby sister his father named Chelsea.
Ian wasn't pleased. He boycotted the baby's very existence, waiting for his father to come to his senses. It was only when Mark sat the boy down and explained, in no uncertain terms, that his mother wasn't coming back and Chelsea wasn't going anywhere because she needed him, that Ian started to accept things.
When he opened up, he realized he enjoyed having a sibling. Baby Chelsea was incredibly responsive to peek-a-boo, tickling, singing, and always seemed to be smiling around her family. The siblings grew up close and, in a year or two, no one on the island could imagine a time when the Thomas' didn't have both Ian and Chelsea.
When the boy turned 15, Mark gave Ian a pokémon he once had; a Charmander. Saying good-bye to his family, Ian left Cinnabar to begin traveling and learning about pokémon of all kinds. Unfortunately, he got no farther than Viridian Forest when a gang of thieves stole his Charmander, leaving him stranded without any pokémon. He very nearly gave up right there, so utterly defeated just a couple days into his travels, when a strange shape approached him. He recognized it as a Furret…but it was pink.
Very, very pink.
Because the pokémon showed no signs of leaving, Ian talked to it, told Furret the whole story. Strangely, the long body pokémon seemed to listen intently. When Ian finished, it grabbed the single empty pokéball on his belt and tapped it. The ball opened, pulled in the Furret, and quickly shut.
Ian had a pokémon. A pink pokémon, but it was a start. He made it to Pewter City with the Furret who, with his utter inability to name things, he decided to call Saver (short for Lifesaver.) It was Saver who first got him into normal-types and inspired him to focus his studies on them.
Ian was happy with the life of a pokémon breeder, especially with Saver and the others he caught at his side. That changed when he got word about his sister, who was in trouble for using her pokémon to attack someone. Unable to understand, he tried to look for Chelsea, but she was gone. Not long after, the volcano on Cinnabar Island erupted, killing his father and many people he’d known since childhood. He wasn’t sure what he expected, but he was furious when Chelsea didn’t show up.
That anger was still raw when, on the way to Ecruteak City to talk with someone who studied oddly-colored pokémon, he met up with Chelsea. She looked different, sure, but he knew it was her. He chewed her up and yelled, two things he knew didn’t work with her, and they parted ways with even less of a relationship than when Mark had first rescued her.
Since then he’s felt guilty, but the anger is stronger and he considers himself without family now, never bothering to look twice when he sees a familiar face or a redhead with a Raichu. Instead, he lives his own life and tries to live up to his idol, Professor Oak, in pokémon know-how.
